Late 1940...... and while Churchill talks a good war, Hitler moves bomber and U boat fleets into fallen France, preparing now to pummel his remaining enemy into submission. With Stalin joining the plunder of Poland, and too many in America appearing indifferent to the plight of Europe, such time won at Dunkirk and in the southern skies fast expires. To whom, then, can a beleaguered PM turn if he is to resist those calling for a negotiated 'peace'..... for him, defeat, national and personal. Step forward spymaster Sir Stewart Menzies, to actually welcome this heat, for it might help ripen his long nurtured plan..... and in as much as this does secure deliverance it is an audacity rewarded, albeit at a cost so shameful as to be best concealed forever. But loose ends will dangle, and some into a quiet corner of Cornwall where, even with the passage of more than forty years, an unravelling could yet revive dormant tyranny. An untimely death, and a puzzling disappearance; a mysterious explosion followed by gunfire; a strange wartime map, torn and tattered; a dark cave holding a sinister occupant; and then the treasure, the riddle within the riddle that is Frenchman's Gold..... all this brings Alan, Kate and Jeremy together again, this time to grapple with GUSTAVE, guardian to the grim secret that is OPERATION HIGHLAND CLEARANCE.
